The Hallé is Britain’s longest-established permanent professional symphony orchestra, founded in Manchester by Sir Charles Hallé in 1858.
The eight cellos from this world leading orchestra create a memorable sound, rich in sonority and high in exhilarating virtuosity, in a staggering range of contrasting repertoire from operatic arias to orchestral masterworks. The programme features Villa-Lobos’ Baroque-influenced Bachianas Brasilieras No. 1, composed for these very forces, and other inventive and sumptuous arrangements by leader Nicholas Trygstad of audience favourites including the overtures from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Rossini’s William Tell.
‘There were too many moments of revelation to enumerate. Here are a few: …the vitally resonant violas and cellos…Be prepared to have your ears scorched.’
